Historically, our US based standards have gone against the rest of the world.  Take the metric system and the US resistance to adapt to a system the rest of world uses. Sure we know a football field is measured in yards, engine power is measured in horsepower, air conditioners are measured in tonnage but, is our reluctance to adapt to a world-wide standard so valid to waste enormous amounts of money with outdated, poorly designed electrical distribution.  I will make the case for the 415/240 method of electrical distribution in the following white paper. The paper is designed to get those who design electrical distribution, specifically in the data center world, thinking “Can we do it better?”.

Datapod USA Partnership to Deliver Washington Data Center

Posted by on July 29, 2014  |  No Comments

130326-Datapod-114-471x347Datapod USA is proud to team with North American partner Universal Networking Services (UNS) to deliver the Datapod data center System for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).

Earlier this year, WSSC named Datapod USA as the successful tenderer to build and deploy their new data center facility on the outskirts of Washington DC.

The WSSC project requires Datapod USA to provide a 200kW data center System that can be scaled up to and beyond 1 MW over time.

The modular Datapod System represents a new approach to providing data center infrastructure allowing extra pods to be added to the data center as future capacity is required.

Datapod USA CEO Adam Smith is delighted with the partnership with UNS.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Datapod and we are very proud to be providing data center infrastructure for one of the United States largest utilities with our valued North American Partners UNS. Leveraging from the experience and knowledge of UNS will add to the success of this project,” said Mr Smith.

The 200kW data center solution equates to a four pod modular system and will be ready for operation months earlier, when compared to a traditional custom-built approach to data center construction.

The Datapod System will enable WSSC to fully manage its own asset and to provide supporting infrastructure such as power, cooling and fire suppression. The Datapod System also provides electrical power feeds, uninterruptible power supply and generator backup.

“From inside, the Datapod System looks like most enterprise grade data centers featuring optimized racks and hot aisle configurations.  The Datapod System also features a patented design that provides us with a strategic advantage,” added Mr Smith.

The tender process attracted bids from several international companies, with Datapod’s technical superiority, experience, speed to deployment, and completeness of the end to end solution leading to the tender win.

WSSC provides water and waste water services to approximately 1.8 million residents around Washington DC and their new Datapod facility is tipped to become an industry leader and will create new opportunities for the organisation by extending WSSC’s position as an advanced user of IT systems.

Datapod Director Adam Smith has released his latest blog post on the benefits of adopting the Datapod System.

The modern CIO could be forgiven for feeling like an island surrounded by shark-infested waters.

With budgetary restraints and the weight of accessing, using and protecting big data on their shoulders, many CIOs are feeling the pressure and asking ‘how do I reduce data center costs’.

That’s why Datapod’s award-winning modular data center system is becoming the new ‘norm’ in data center infrastructure.

We all know, Datapod’s system is flexible and scalable, to suit any size of business, and the modular system means that additional capacity can be purchased inline with organisational growth, effectively future-proofing the company’s data center needs.

Costs are kept low through a standardised, production-line approach. This has the added benefit of increasing quality control, with every part checked against pre-set standards and factory acceptance tested before being released from the factory.

Traditional, custom-engineered data center construction comes with a host of associated risks, delays and steep costs, and can result in an inflexible end facility. Repeatable modular design solves all of these problems, while economies of scale result in lower capital investment, improved capital efficiency, reduced operational costs and decreased cost of total ownership.

Table 1.1 below shows an example scenario of a customer requiring 150-kW of incremental IT capacity annually for the next five years, for a total of 1-MW IT capacity. The assumed energy cost in the example below is 12.01¢/KW/hr.

describe the image

Given the figures in table 1.1, it’s no wonder that government and private sector CIO’s in areas as diverse as mining, petroleum, finance and education are getting excited over the possibilities that modular data center construction offers.

As well as having numerous financial and operational advantages over traditional, bricks and mortar data centers, Datapod’s modular system also offers a level of security and corporate risk advantages that hosting in the cloud cannot match.

Many CIO’s rightly fear the cloud’s capability as a reliable solution when protecting data and data sovereignty.

Last year’s annual Computer Weekly/TechTarget IT Priorities Survey found that security, reliability and protecting company data were major concerns for those considering the use of the cloud for business critical data.

Data center downtime and loss of production is another issue keeping many CIO’s awake at night.

According to the Aberdeen Group’s 2010 research (Disaster Avoidance and Disaster Recovery; Making your Datacenter Disaster Resilient), organisations lose an average of $138,000 for every hour their data centers are down. For companies with more than 1,000 employees, that’s $1.1 million per year.

Datapod’s modular data center system has been designed with reduced downtime in mind.

Our engineers have taken into account factors such as extreme outside temperatures, protection from the ingress of moisture, dirt and dust, and the effects of lightning strikes, cyclones and other extreme events. Thus the Datapod data center can survive in the most extreme outdoor environments, with intricately designed utility pods providing the full power and cooling redundancy your would expect from an world class enterprise grade data center.

At every stage of development, flexibility has been at the heart of Datapod’s design, to the extent that the system does not require an all or nothing approach.

The Datapod System can be used alongside existing data center buildings as well as augmenting cloud-based services, or as a stepping stone to moving to a full modular data center infrastructure. Such integration means that the Datapod infrastructure can act as a disaster recovery option or extra redundancy for organisations with those systems already in place.

This flexible modular approach is reflective of Datapod’s fundamental belief that data centers of the future are machines, not buildings. Datapod’s work has proven the validity of this core truth time and again, while at the same time saving CIO’s money on their bottom line.

Global data demands are continuing to grow. In 2011 Science journal published the results of a scientific estimate of the amount of data stored in the world by 2007. The result was 295 exabytes – the equivalent of 1.2 billion average hard drives. Interestingly, the scientists found that in 2000 75% of information was stored in analogue format. Just seven years later, an incredible 94% of it was stored digitally.

This growth of big data has led to data centers becoming increasingly critical.

The latest research into the sector from Markets and Markets projected that by 2018, the size of the modular data center market will reach $40 billion, as more and more CIO’s understand the advantages of the scalability, flexibility, reusability, portability, reduced deployment time, enhanced efficiency and lower total cost of ownership that modular centers provide.

Datapod’s award-winning modular infrastructure provides a high quality, cost effective solution for companies across a wide range of industries. It’s ready for deployment now. What are you waiting for?

Each Datapod System starts with, you guessed it, a Starterpod.

The Starterpod contains the power, cooling and data input connections. Within the Starterpod the expandable modular UPS gives customers the starting point for growing the system.

Built-in Inrow cooling and racks mean the data center can be up and running without any further upfront investment.

When two Starterpods are used in a Datapod System a 2(N+1) system is created providing the highest levels of availability and redundancy.

Datapod’s modular data center solution reduces operational and downtime costs and has attracted CIOs from around the Asia-Pacific at the CIO Summit in Hong Kong.

An essential part of any modern CIO’s role is to plan their company’s information disaster recovery process.

It is a task worth committing both time and expenditure to, as a well-prepared and tested data recovery plan is invaluable if the worst happens.

According to Fortune 500 report 59% of companies experience 1.6 hours of downtime per week, which could potenially lead to a loss of $46 million annually, which means getting the balance right between redundancy and downtime is critical to productivity and profitability. (Pictured right: A Datapod module gets lifted into place for a busy South Asian port).

Datapod’s modular approach (watch a short video on the modular approach) to data center design enables customers to easily add in extra redundancy to reduce the chance of a downtime event.

Thankfully, the cost of data center construction has reduced considerably in recent years and CIO’s who are gathering in Hong Kong for the CIO Summit 2013 from 23-26 September will have the opportunity to talk with us about how Datapod’s modular data centers are enabling CIO’s to reduce operating costs without diminishing quality outcomes.

Savvy CIOs are now finding that by keeping up to date with the latest data center systems they are able to implement first-class data recovery solutions while coming in under budget for the project.

Cutting edge, modular data center systems, such as those offered by award-winning industry specialist Datapod, use a clever combination of leading engineering methods and prefabrication, in order to substantially reduce the cost of data center construction.

This proven method of cost reduction has the added advantage of also reducing risk, as standardisation of quality outcomes and factory testing combine to ensure enhanced system reliability when compared with brick and mortar constructions.

Datapod’s modular data center has a number of other proven cost advantages over more traditional alternatives. Energy dependence is minimized, servicing costs are reduced and different functional modules can be deployed in line with a company’s needs, rather than all at once.

The availability of such high quality yet budget friendly solutions has opened up the usage of modular data centers to new sectors in a range of industries.

The mining, petroleum and education sectors have shown particular interest in data centers of late, attracted by the proven cost reductions that industry leading companies, such as Datapod have been able to achieve.

For years CIOs have struggled with the cost/benefit analysis of if and when they can afford to implement a data center for their company.

Finally, through factory-tested, enterprise grade performance in any location, enhanced power efficiency and operational cost savings, Datapod is proving that CIOs can achieve their data security goals and reduce risk, at the same time as minimizing expenditure.

Modular data center solutions are transforming the data center market and Datapod is at the global forefront of innovation and design.

While containerized and mobile data centers can be deployed quickly, the similarities to a true modular data center system end there.

The construction, design, scalability and integration options of modular data center not only far exceed the containerized offering but the efficiencies of the modular system provide organisations with leading Data Center 2.0 technology and a product that enables right-sizing and massive CAPEX and OPEX savings.

When Datapod first looked at the idea of creating a modular solution, the options were to construct a module, or use something already in existence. We opted not to re-invent the wheel, but to enhance it.

The ‘wheel’ was not a shipping container, it was the form-factor of the shipping container.

This is an important point – where others have built a shipping container into a data center, at Datapod we build the data center out of the form factor of an ISO standard module.

We recognized that this module was the perfect building block upon which to develop an expandable architecture. We could build any feature we like into the dimensions, such as security and insulation.

Inside a Datapod Data Center

The modular Datapod System is also inherently secure, and security and monitoring can include:

  • Provides the perfect faraday cage – signals and data shall remain secure even against EMP and evesdropping,
  • Physical security properties of steel safe – upgradable to military specifications
  • Internal and external cameras,
  • Enhanced door and lock (Bilock) options,
  • Prox-card and magnetic lock options,
  • Perimeter fence or wall (site specific, on request).

This environment provides the highest levels of security and protection while the rugged cyclone proof exterior means the modular data center is at home in extreme remote defence deployments (with a camouflage exterior), part of a telecommunications hub network, or as a colocation data hall in an urban or university environment.

Secondly, modular building block design also has significant advantages when factoring in redundancy and extra capacity which in turn provides our customers with better budgetary outcomes.

Containerized data centres are not integrated and are not tier certifiable, whereas the modular Datapod data center can build in any number of extra redundancy combinations. The Datapod modular data center system provides a modern, high-quality modular data center solution.

Right from the moment customers design and download a data center proposal using the Datapod App for iPad, customers are on the path to creating an enterprise-grade data center solution that is deployable in just 12-16 weeks.

Furthermore cost savings are made through the standardization of components and construction as well as energy savings through efficient design. For example most containers are full of IT equipment and rely on additional infrastructure to operate.

Alternatively, modular data centers used advanced cooling technology, implementing evaporative cooling and making use of outside air efficiently. Highly energy efficient with the ability to match cooling to actual IT demand, modular data centers can also optimize data center utilization from 25 percent up to 90 percent.

Better still, modular data centers like the Datapod System are all Factory Acceptance Tested (FAT) before deployment. FAT has significant derisking benefits and means customers receive a data center that is fully operational and ready to hit the ground running once deployed.

And finally, inside a Datapod modular data center staff have room to move around with four-foot wide cold aisles and three-foot wide hot aisles that enable staff to work comfortably and provides ample space to move rack mounted gear.

Modular data centers are engineered to support mainframes, storage arrays and IT racks from most manufacturers – being vender neutral provides customers with the ultimate in flexibility for both new and legacy systems.

Modular data center solutions require no retro fitting and a physical environment separated from other building or site infrastructure.

Modular data centers such as the Datapod System have a host of other features that provide customers with many benefits.

To take a look at some of our most frequently asked data center questions.
