WHY MODULAR DATA CENTERS ARE MORE THAN JUST A CONTAINERIZED SOLUTION

Modular data center solutions are transforming the data center market and Datapod is at the global forefront of innovation and design.

While containerized and mobile data centers can be deployed quickly, the similarities to a true modular data center system end there.

The construction, design, scalability and integration options of modular data center not only far exceed the containerized offering but the efficiencies of the modular system provide organisations with leading Data Center 2.0 technology and a product that enables right-sizing and massive CAPEX and OPEX savings.

When Datapod first looked at the idea of creating a modular solution, the options were to construct a module, or use something already in existence. We opted not to re-invent the wheel, but to enhance it.

The ‘wheel’ was not a shipping container, it was the form-factor of the shipping container.

This is an important point – where others have built a shipping container into a data center, at Datapod we build the data center out of the form factor of an ISO standard module.

We recognized that this module was the perfect building block upon which to develop an expandable architecture. We could build any feature we like into the dimensions, such as security and insulation.

The modular Datapod System is also inherently secure, and security and monitoring can include:

  • Provides the perfect faraday cage – signals and data shall remain secure even against EMP and evesdropping,

Secondly, modular building block design also has significant advantages when factoring in redundancy and extra capacity which in turn provides our customers with better budgetary outcomes.

Containerized data centres are not integrated and are not tier certifiable, whereas the modular Datapod data center can build in any number of extra redundancy combinations. The Datapod modular data center system provides a modern, high-quality modular data center solution.

Right from the moment customers design and download a data center proposal using the Datapod App for iPad, customers are on the path to creating an enterprise-grade data center solution that is deployable in just 12-16 weeks.

Furthermore cost savings are made through the standardization of components and construction as well as energy savings through efficient design. For example most containers are full of IT equipment and rely on additional infrastructure to operate.

Alternatively, modular data centers used advanced cooling technology, implementing evaporative cooling and making use of outside air efficiently. Highly energy efficient with the ability to match cooling to actual IT demand, modular data centers can also optimize data center utilization from 25 percent up to 90 percent.

Deploying and Using Containerized/Modular Data Center Facilities

Over the past several years, the data center facilities industry has started toward a significant transformation.  In this transformation, traditional perceptions of data center facilities as multi-year, site-constructed, low-density buildings are shifting toward viewing them as conceived and constructed form a modular, flexible, and certainly more rapidly deployable set of solutions.  Within this latter view are solutions that include not only containerized platforms, but also modular, pre-engineered, and pre-fabricated building blocks.  When deployed and integrated with the required mechanical, electrical, and related services, these buidling blocks come together and enable the end user to realize a complete data center facility.

In contrast to traditional site-construction methods, the new containerized/modular approach to the construction and deployment of a data center can result in a faster deployment, lower operating and capital costs, and the potential to be equipped with higher density and energy-savings targets.  Furthermore, this new approach enables organizations to adjust their data center facilities’ capacity up and down in smaller, prescribed steps rather than in large jumps.  Many organizations also will look at the containerized/modular approach to help them cycle new IT and facility technologies into production, while cycling out older and less cost-effective solutions. That said, there are particular considerations that need to be accounted for as part of the planning, design, deployment, operations, and decommissioning phases of the facility lifecycle.

The Green Grid (TGG)-an international, non-profit consortium working to enhance data center resource efficiency-produced this white paper to introduce the audience to some of the more critical of these considerations.  It offers a framework of understanding that, when coupled with the right qualified expertise, may enable potential end users of containerized/modular data center facility (CMDF) platforms to be more prepared and successful in their proposed projects.  The white paper explores the traditional facility construction approach, with a deep discussion of the containerized/modular facility approach in Chapter III.  Chapters IV, V, VI explore particular considerations, limitations, and advantages of the containerized/modular facility architecture and contrasts those factors with the traditional construction approach.

Executive Summary:

The rapidly maturing containerized and/modular data center facility (CMDF) platforms offered within the industry today can enable organizations to realize significant and demonstrated technical and business value when properly applied.  This value comes from the repeatable, pre-engineered, prefabricated, and quality-assured set of building blocks that together bring online the necessary amount of IT capacity.

This new containerized/modular approach to the construction and deployment of a data center can be expected to be rapidly deployed, have lower operating and capital costs, and be equipped with higher density and energy-savings targets.  CMDF architecture has become an increasingly viable and robust alternative when considering a data center build, with multiple implementation approaches from various suppliers in the industry.

Conclusion:

The CMDF approach can enable organizations to deploy IT equipment, capacity, and services in less time, for less cost, and under new and more business-appropriate delivery and costing models.  The prefabricated and pre-engineered nature of a module can significantly reduce the potential quality and time risks typically found in traditional fixed-facility, site-constructed approaches.  The CMDF archetecture has become an increasingly viable and robust alternative when considering a data center build, as long as organizations take into account a CMDF’s particular needs and engage proper expertise and capabilities from trusted partners.  Organizations should carefully weigh their need against the advantages, risks and challenges that a CMDF deployment may present.

Why Would Companies Buy A Modular Solution?

CAPEX: Data center design and construction costs can vary widely, according to a large number of criteria. This makes cost comparisons of all kinds of construction difficult, contentious and sometimes misleading. A CAPEX cost of $15m per MW of IT load is a mid-level estimate for a traditional build that would be appropriate for enterprise use. That is the number used in a recent report by 451 Group (The Economics of Prefabricated Modular Data Centers)  for a traditional build, to which prefabricated modular CAPEX costs are compared. The middle 50% of CAPEX cost estimates for prefabricated modular designs are in the range of $8m-11m/MW. The median estimate is around $9m/MW. Prefabricated modular design and delivery of data centers can reduce CAPEX costs by 10-30%.

Deferred Capital Cost: As a large capital expense, building a data center is typically a large project that requires a lot of money upfront to anticipate forecasted IT needs for the next 10 to 15 years. Rapidly changing technology in the data center makes it difficult to justify such a large capital expense for a building that will only hopefully keep pace with technology demands. Modular solutions can be seen as a way to intelligently apply capital to the data center in line with changing technology and IT requirements.

Operating Expense: The engineering in modular solutions has proven, known efficiency throughout subsystems which allow regular operating expenses to be optimized. Optimized power and cooling built-in to modules equate to a lower overall operating expense. The fact that modules are engineered products means that internal subsystems are tightly integrated which results in efficiency gains in power and cooling in the module. First generation and pure IT modules will most likely not have efficiency gains other than those enjoyed from a similar containment solution inside of a traditional data center. Having a modular power plant in close proximity to the IT it serves will save money in costly distribution gear and power loss from being so close. There are opportunities to use energy management platforms within modules as well, with all subsystems being engineered as a whole.

Real Estate: Modules allow operators to build out in increments of power instead of space. Many second generation modular products feature evaporative cooling, taking advantage of outside air. A radical shift in data center design takes away the true brick and mortar of a data center, placing modules in an outdoor park, connected by supporting infrastructure and protected only by a perimeter fence. Some modular solutions offer stacking also — putting twice the capacity in the same footprint.

BUSINESS ALIGNMENT

Rightsizing: Modular design ultimately enables an optimized delivery approach for matching IT needs. This ability to right-size infrastructure as IT needs grow enables enterprise alignment with IT and data center strategies. The module container can also provide capacity when needed quickly for projects or temporary capacity adjustments.

Supply Chain: Many of the attributes of a modular approach speak to the implementation of a supply chain process at the data center level. As a means of optimizing deployment, the IT manager directs vendors and controls costs throughout the supply chain.

Total Cost of Ownership:

  • Acquisition: Underutilized infrastructure due to over-building is eliminated by being deployed as needed.
  • Installation: Weeks and months instead of more than 12 months.
  • Operations: Standardized components to support and modules are engineered for extreme-efficiency.
  • Maintenance: Standardized components enable universal maintenance programs.

 

OPERATIONAL

Speed of Deployment: Modular solutions have incredibly quick timeframes from order to deployment. As a standardized solution it is manufactured and able to be ordered, customized and delivered to the data center site in a matter of months (or less). Having a module manufactured also means that the site construction can progress in parallel, instead of a linear, dependent transition.

Standardization: Seen as a part of the industrialization of data centers the modular solution is a standardized approach to build a data center, much like Henry Ford took towards building cars. Manufactured data center modules are constructed against a set model of components at a different location instead of the data center site. Standardized infrastructure within the modules enable standard operating procedures to be used universally. Since the module is prefabricated, the operational procedures are identical and can be packaged together with the modular solution to provide standardized documentation for subsystems within the module.

Scalability: With a repeatable, standardized design, it is easy to match demand and scale infrastructure quickly. The only limitations on scale for a modular data center are the supporting infrastructure at the data center site and available land. Another characteristic of scalability is the flexibility it grants by having modules that can be easily replaced when obsolete or if updated technology is needed.

Mobility and Placement: A modular data center can be delivered where ever its desired by the end user. A modular solution is mobile in the sense that it can be transported in pieces and reassembled quickly on-site. Mobility is an attractive feature for those looking at modular for disaster recovery solutions.

Density and PUE: Density in a traditional data center is typically 100 watts per square foot. In a modular solution the space is used very efficiently and features densities as much as 20 kilowatts per cabinet. Because the module is pre-engineered and standardized densities are higher and the effective use of electrical power is improved.  (The Economics of Prefabricated Modular Datacenters; 451 Group, 2012).
